Courmayeur – on the snow

After a short but pleasant bus ride through the Mont Blanc tunnel and another short bus to the cable car things were looking good. Snow was falling and it looked like it had been for some time, lots of fresh powder everywhere.

Michael was having problems with his bindings so that was the first thing that needed sorting at the top.

The visibility at the top of the cable car was good but as soon as we got a bit of altitude that changed and you can see in the video that it was pretty much a white out at the top, you couldn’t see where the piste ended and this being the first time that we had been here is was a bit of a strange feeling.

The snow was fantastic which made up for the lack of any view and we must have done about 7 or 8 runs before we took a break for lunch, really Italian food for me and Michael… burger and chips, nice.

It must have been around 2 by the time we finished lunch and we needed to be back at the bus in town for 5 or we would be stuck so we agreed that we would get down to the cable car that we came up for no later than 4. Problem was we couldn’t seem to find a route down to it… anyway, we managed to speak with some guys who told us that the cable car that we had found would actually take us right into the town centre, 5 minute walk to the bus that would take us back to Chamonix. So we were sorted.

Had a really good time in Courmayeur, well worth the trip over there.

Overall this time in Chamonix was just as good if not better than before, mainly because of the snow in Courmayeur. Our main problem is that it’s so expensive, I mean 22 euro for 3 beers, madness.

Might have to try somewhere a bit cheaper next time. Until then …

Escape to Courmayeur (m’lord)

Two things that we wanted to do on this trip to Chamonix; first one was do the Vallee Blanche and the second was to have a day in Courmayeur, Italy. It was looking unlikely that we would be able to get the Vallee Blanche in as most guides were telling us that it was unsafe for snowboarder as the snow bridges over the craveses were weak, never mind.

In order to get to Courmayeur from Chamonix you have to book a seat on a bus that runs from the train station in Chamonix through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur, where you can then catch the ski bus to the cable car. The Weather in Chamonix was over cast but it wasn’t snowing, in Courmayeur it was very different. Once we got through the tunnel you could see that it had been snowing for a quite a while so we were looking forward to some powder and we weren’t disappointed when we got there, more about that later.
